JOHNSON EYES “WESTERN WORLD” SOUTHWEST “CAPPER” AT CANYON

A trio of events close out the USAC Southwest Sprint Car season this weekend as they share the 47th Annual Sands Chevrolet “Western World Championships” at Canyon Speedway Park in Peoria, Ariz. with the Honda National and Western Midgets. The Sprint car portion of the program also carries USAC West Coast Sprint “special event” status.

R.J. Johnson of Phoenix, Ariz. stands atop the Southwest points with a 116-point cushion over Josh Pelkey. Charles Davis Jr. trails the leader by 142 points.

Johnson has three wins, two seconds and a third in seven Canyon point races already this year. He also posted a pair of third-place finishes in “special event” features at Canyon at the start of 2014.

Pelkey’s seven Canyon points races have resulted in a pair of wins and a third. Davis also recorded a victory at the 3/8-mile dirt oval.

Matt Mitchell of Yorba Linda, Calif. is the newly-crowned USAC West Coast Sprint Car king but has not competed at Canyon this season.
