VENTURA HOSTS CRA SPRINTS MAY 7; HODGES GRABS LAST-LAP VICTORY IN SO-CAL SHOWDOWN

Richard Vander Weerd stands third in the latest USAC/CRA AMSOIL Sprint Car Series, but he’s only two points back of the leaders entering a May 7 race at Ventura (Calif.) Raceway where he triumphed last year.

He trails Josh Hodges and Brody Roa, who are tied for the lead after Hodges’ come-from-behind victory in last Saturday night’s “So-Cal Showdown” at Perris (Calif.) Auto Speedway.

Hodges, of Tijeras, N.M., stole the victory from Damion Gardner on the final corner of the final lap. Gardner had led from lap 10 when he passed Vander Weerd for the lead.

Gardner finished second ahead of Roa, Vander Weerd and R.J. Johnson. The win was Hodges’ first win CRA win, and first at Perris, as he wheeled the Jackson Compaction/Mesilla Valley Transportation Maxim/Gibson to victory.
