EDWARDS EYES THIS WEEKEND’S “DUEL IN THE DESERT” .25 OPENER

Seven-year-old Drake Edwards of Surprise, Ariz. has his sights set on a big weekend when the USAC Mopar .25 Midgets converge on the Valley of the Sun Quarter Midget oval in Phoenix this Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the “Duel in the Desert,” the opening round of the USAC “Generation Next” 2k11 season.

Edwards won last Saturday’s Junior Animal main event in just his second Junior Animal start, leading all 30 laps from start to finish in a race which featured non-stop competition with no cautions.

Although he had scored numerous heat race wins the past three years and wins at other tracks, Saturday’s win was his first at his “home” track. The second generation driver, Drake says: “I wanted to win one for my brother Talon on his birthday. Now I’m excited about the upcoming big National race this weekend.”

This weekend’s Phoenix event, the first in the Machine Tools Supply Southwest Series, opens the 2011 USAC “Generation Next Tour” as the battle for National Championships in USAC’s Mopar .25 Midget Series begins.

The 12-race “Generation Next Tour” winds through, Arizona, Tennessee, North Carolina, New Mexico, California, Ohio, Maryland, Wisconsin, Indiana and Michigan.
