USAC INDIANA MIDGETS RETURN THIS SATURDAY TO DAUGHERTY SPEEDWAY
USAC’s Indiana Midget Championship resumes its 2016 season this Saturday, September 10 at Boswell, Indiana’s Daugherty Speedway.
The visit to the dirt oval in western Indiana is the first for USAC since a 2009 National Sprint Car race won by Dave Darland at the track that was then known as Kamp Motor Speedway. Jerry Coons, Jr. won the first two visits by the sprint cars back in 2007 and 2008.
This Saturday will mark the seventh appearance for a USAC midget division at Daugherty, but the first with the regionally-based Indiana Midget Championship.
Throughout USAC’s first five appearances, the track was called Henry’s Speedway. Previous USAC National Midget races at the track were won by Bob Tattersall and Lee Kunzman in 1969, Mel Cornett in 1970, Billy Shuman in 1973 and Johnny Parsons in 1977. Coons was victorious in the last appearance in 2007.
Tanner Thorson leads the USAC Indiana Midget Championship standings after winning the series’ last race at Plymouth (Ind.) Speedway in June. Bryan Clauson won the series season opener at Plymouth in May.
Among the entrants expected Saturday are Gas City Indiana Sprint Week winner Tyler Courtney of Indianapolis, Ind. as well as four-time USAC National Midget feature winner Davey Ray of Davenport, Iowa and 2009 “Hoosier Hundred” winner Shane Hollingsworth.
