A LOOK BACK: 1986 USAC NATIONAL SPRINT CAR SEASON

Steve Butler of Kokomo, Indiana earned his first USAC National championship as he drove the Phil Poor-prepared Stoops Express/T & J Tire Chevy to the 1986 Crestliner Vans Sprint Car series title, winning two races and compiling consistent finishes all season long.

Steve missed the series-opening feature at Eldora in April, and even after a third-place in the “Tony Hulman Classic” at Terre Haute in May, he was still not in the top-ten in the standings.  His triumph at Putnamville on May 17, however, vaulted him to fifth while a second to defending series titlist Rick Hood at Lawrenceburg three weeks later boosted him to third.

Four more top-four finishes, culminating in a spectacular victory at Santa Fe on August 29, elevated him to the points lead, which he protected in the “4-Crown Nationals” series finale at Eldora by finishing third.  Hood and Sheldon Kinser, both mathematically in the title chase at Eldora, placed eighth and ninth respectively to wind up second and third in the final standings.

The top-five drivers in the final standings accounted for all the feature event victories in the 1986 series, with Hood and Rich Vogler each taking three checkered flags.  Hood won the “Don Branson/Jud Larson Classic” at Eldora in April, as well as races at Lawrenceburg and Springfield.

Vogler won the series opener and closer at Eldora and became the 15th different winner in 16 runnings of the “Tony Hulman Classic” at Terre Haute in May.  He wound up fourth in the final standings.

Three-time series titlist Sheldon Kinser won the big “Wabash Clash” at Terre Haute in July and added a 40-lap win at Putnamville, while Jack Hewitt took a wild 40-lapper at Bloomington in May and ended up fifth in series points.

Drivers played musical cars early in the season, with Hood leaving Damon Fortune to drive for Gohr Distributing.  After winning two races in the Genesee Beer Wagon, Rick switched back to the Fortune team and won at Springfield in the Coors Light/Rose Brothers Trucking Chevy.

Kenny Jacobs took over the Genesee Beer car in July and was an impressive USAC Sprint Car Rookie, nearly winning on more than one occasion.

Vogler, after winning at Eldora and Terre Haute with Fortune, split with that team in July and drove the Johnny Vance Aristocrat Products Chevy to the “4-Crown” win.

Even Sheldon Kinser found himself with a new team in ’86, winning two races in the Pointe Golf & Tennis Resort/Country Music Magazine machine for Bloomington car owner Bill Kirtley.

Drivers benefitted from Last Chance race sponsorship in 1986 by companies such as Tom Stenger Ford, Adams Mark Hotel, Bowen Oldsmobile, Gohr Distributing, USAC Motoring Division, CNA Insurance and Syndicate Systems.
