MIDGETS JOIN CHICO’S “GOLD CUP” THURSDAY;

“VERMEIL CLASSIC” WINS TO ABREU, LARSON

The Honda USAC Western Midgets tackle Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, Calif. Thursday night as part of the track’s “Gold Cup” activities. Ronnie Gardner continues to lead the series after third and fifth-place finishes in last week’s “Louie Vermeil Classic” races at Calistoga, Calif.

Rico Abreu of Rutherford, Calif. sped to victory in Saturday night’s 25-lap Honda USAC Western Midget victory at Calistoga Speedway, opening the 6th “Louie Vermeil Classic.” Abreu caught Shane Golobic on lap nine and led the rest of the way to beat Ryan Bernal, fast qualifier Gardner, Golobic and Cody Swanson. Abreu piloted the Kunz Motorsports/Curb-Agajanian Toyota TRD Bullet/Speedway Toyota.

Kyle Larson of Elk Grove, Calif. wheeled the Kunz Motorsports/Curb-Agajanian Toyota TRD Bullet/Speedway Toyota to victory in Sunday’s 25-lap feature at Calistoga. He led the last 23 laps after passing Golobic on lap three. Abreu finished second, followed by Bryan Clauson, Golobic and fast qualifier Gardner.
