J.J. YELEY RETURNS TO DuQUOIN WITH ENTHUSIASM; 2002 WINNER SEEKS 2ND “TED HORN 100” TITLEJ.J. Yeley of Phoenix, Ariz. will return to the “Magic Mile” Sunday to compete in the “Ted Horn 100” USAC K & N Silver Crown Championship race at the DuQuoin (Ill.) State Fairgrounds.Yeley won the 2002 running of the race which dates back to 1948 and looks forward to the Sunday night atmosphere at the 1-mile dirt oval.“I’m excited to be going back to DuQuoin,” says Yeley. “It’s the most fun of any of the Silver Crown venues for me, especially since the race switched to a night race. The track gets real wide and it’s a great place to race. In 2003, the first time the race was at night, I probably should have won it,” he adds. “I led the first 75 miles before my car lost its stagger and I slipped back to third at the end. Hopefully that won’t happen this time.”In 2003 Yeley dominated USAC racing like no other driver ever has. Matching Tony Stewart’s 1995 feat of sweeping USAC’s National “Triple Crown,” Yeley amassed an all-time single-season record of 24 feature victories, which included four in the Silver Crown series. Two of those four wins were on the dirt miles at Indianapolis, Ind. and Syracuse, N.Y.The 2003 series champion will pilot the Hot Hues/Dooling Machine Twister/Gaerte entered by Hartford, Ill. car owner Joe Dooling.Yeley stands third on the all-time Silver Crown winner’s list with 15, trailing only Jack Hewitt (23) and Dave Steele (16). He’s one of only five drivers to win more than one race each on both pavement and dirt tracks and he owns more than a dozen pole starts.Sunday night’s race marks Yeley’s first Silver Crown appearance since his ninth-place finish in last November’s Phoenix race featuring the “new-generation” pavement cars. It’ll be his first dirt-track Silver Crown start since his 2003 title-clinching Syracuse victory.
