In celebration of the 50th year of USAC Silver Crown Champ Car racing in 2020, we are reviewing the past 49 years of series history.

1977 USAC DIRT CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON REVIEW

It was an all-Indiana combination that won the 1977 USAC Championship Dirt Car title as Larry Rice, born and raised in Linden, near Crawfordsville, outpointed his rivals with a car constructed three years ago by Lafayette resident Dave LeFevre.

Unlike the 1976 season when drivers had a hard time scoring points in more than one event, Rice was strong throughout 1977.  He started out by winning the Springfield, Ill. opener in fine style, coming from the seventh starting position to take the lead almost immediately.  There were several occasions when caution periods permitted his pursuers to bunch up behind him.  But once the green flag was redisplayed, Rice would steadily rebuild the lead and won handily over Sheldon Kinser and Billy Engelhart.

Larry was relegated to fifth place at Du Quoin, Ill. the following week but remained in the point lead as Kinser dropped out while running third, and Engelhart’s mechanical woes had prevented him from even starting.  Du Quoin winner Tom Bigelow had failed to finish at Springfield while second and third place finishers Gary Bettenhausen and Billy Cassella had both been non-starters in that race.

Pancho Carter led all 100 laps of the Hoosier Hundred but Rice finished a strong second ahead of Sheldon Kinser in third.  Rice’s fine placing now eliminated all but Kinser as mathematical challengers with only the Syracuse race remaining.  The trek to Syracuse three weeks later was all for naught.  They got rained out!

The Syracuse race was finally run on October 15, but Rice encountered early difficulties.  The faithful Chevrolet engine, which had performed so well in three consecutive races, no longer cooperated and blew during practice.  Rice had a 160-point lead over Kinser, and if Rice failed to score, Kinser would have to win to beat him, while a second for Kinser under the same circumstances would have closed the season with co-champions.

Rice needed only to finish eighth if Kinser won which hadn’t seemed that much of a proposition until he rolled to the pits with a blown engine.

Ron Shuman sportingly offered Rice his seat in Ray Smith’s car, and with absolutely no practice, Rice qualified for the starting field.  He spun once along the 100-mile journey but still arrived safely in 10th place, just one position behind Kinser.  Not only did Kinser’s point total fall short of Rice’s, Kinser was even outpointed for the runner-up position by Billy Vukovich, having to settle for third.

It’s the second USAC title for Rice who won the Midget championship in 1973.  He started with the Midget division driving his father’s “Old Blue” Kurtis back in 1968 just before his 22nd birthday and moved to the Dirt car circuit with LeFevre in 1974.  His interest in racing stems from the mid-1950s when he regularly went to the races with his dad and retained an almost encyclopedia knowledge of that period.

Gary Bettenhausen matched his finest Dirt car performance ever by taking second from Billy Cassella on the final lap of the race.  Billy Vukovich took fourth after starting on the front row and leading the opening lap.

Al Unser made his 1977 Dirt car debut at Du Quoin, running well until lap 85 when the Pizza Hut car dropped out with an oil leak.  Jan Opperman also made his return to Dirt car racing but failed to earn one of the 24 starting spots despite posting a respectable time in the Nelson Snow machine.

SILVER ANNIVERSARY HOOSIER HUNDRED GOES TO PANCHO

Indianapolis, Indiana………Pancho Carter led all 100 miles of the September 10 Silver Anniversary Hoosier Hundred Dirt Championship race, driving the Rieder Racers Dobbins Chevy.  He outqualified a field of 50 cars and was never headed, with Dirt series point leader Larry Rice taking second in the Carmichael Trucking Chevy of Dave LeFevre.

A.J. Foyt and Johnny Rutherford both missed the Hoosier Hundred starting field, Foyt involved in a three-car accident during the 10-mile qualifying race.  He was uninjured.  Steve Chassey won the qualifier, which determined the final four starting spots for the Hoosier Hundred.

Ted Wise also escaped uninjured in a flip during qualifications.

Carter’s victory was his second in the Dirt cars after winning last year’s Salt City 100 at Syracuse.

One of the largest crowds in Hoosier Hundred history was on hand.
