SPRINTS ‘OFF” UNTIL SALEM AUGUST 3

Levi Jones of Avon, Ind. emerged from the past two weeks of Chevy Powers Indiana Sprint Week action as the USAC National Sprint Car point leader and will try to protect that position when the series resumes action August 3 in the “Joe James/Pat O’Connor Memorial” at the Salem (Ind.) Speedway.

Jones finished second to Hunter Scheurenberg in Saturday night’s finale at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt and edged Dave Darland for the Chevy Powers “Indiana Sprint Week” title by eight points. Darland finished sixth in the 30-lap finale. Jerry Coons Jr. took third in the final standings after finishing eighth Saturday. The championship was the second for Jones in “Indiana Sprint Week” as he was also the 2004 titlist.

Scheurenberg trailed Damion Gardner for four laps before putting his Hoosier Tire/Jam-It-In Storage Maxim/Claxton Chevy into the lead at Tri-State. He led the last 26 laps to score his initial USAC National Sprint win and beat Jones, Tracy Hines, Jeff Bland Jr. and Gardner. Shane Cottle and Hines rounded out the “top-five” in the final Chevy Powers Indiana Sprint Week standings.

Coons, of Tucson, Ariz., scored his third consecutive USAC National victory at Kamp Motor Speedway Thursday night, leading all 30 laps of the Chevy Powers Indiana Sprint Week feature. Coons also won last year’s Indiana Sprint Week and Indiana Midget Week features at Kamp. The win was also the 71st in USAC National Sprint competition for the Hoffman Auto Racing Team who fields Coons’ Kroger-Tide, Bounty-Pringles F5/Gaerte Mopar. Tracy Hines, Cottle, Jesse Hockett and Jones rounded out the “top-five.”

Coons scored his second consecutive feature victory of the 2008 Chevy Powers “Indiana Sprint Week” Friday night at Bloomington Speedway, leading the final seven laps of the 30-lap race in his Kroger/Tide, Bounty/Pringles F5/Mopar. The win came after a heat race flip and boosted Coons to second in the Chevy Powers Indiana Sprint Week standings, six behind Darland going into Saturday night’s finale. Jones finished second at Bloomington, followed by Darland, Cottle and Jeff Bland Jr. Bryan Clauson and Cottle traded the lead back and forth for the first 23 laps of the race. Darland started 21st after qualifying 33rd and charged from 13th in the closing laps to salvage third.
