WESTERN SPRINTS RETURN TO MADERA SATURDAY

MURGOITIO GETS WIN #4 AT SALT LAKE CITY

Tanner Swanson of Kingsburg, Calif. leads the USAC Western Sprints back to Madera (Calif.) Speedway Saturday, holding a 33-point edge over runner-up JoJo Helberg. Tanner is seeking his third victory of the 2009 campaign, his first at the track where Helberg won the 2009 series opener in April.

Swanson and his brother Kody have won four of the six series races contested to date, both of Tanner’s wins coming at All American Speedway in Roseville. Tanner’s fourth-place finish at Madera earlier this year is his worst in six starts in 2009. He hasn’t finished worse than second in a race since.

Tony Hunt, who has climbed to fourth in the standings, also bears watching Saturday. He was the fastest qualifier for the April race.

Mike Murgoitio of Meridian, Idaho earned his fourth victory of the 2009 USAC Young Automotive Rocky Mountain Sprint Car campaign Sunday night at Rocky Mountain Raceways in Salt Lake City, Utah, leading the final 19 of 40 laps in his GM Land & Cattle Eagle. Fast qualifier Jim Waters ended up second ahead of Jeff Bergener, Paul Marconi and Brian McClish. Marconi led lap one and Ryan Burdett led the next 20 laps before touching wheels with a lapped car and spinning. Burdett came back to finish seventh.
