SHELDON KINSER CONNECTS FOR SECOND-STRAIGHT USAC SPRINT TITLE IN 1982

Tall, talented Sheldon Kinser etched his name in the history books in 1982 by winning his second-straight USAC National Sprint Car championship and his third overall.

Kinser, a Bloomington, Ind. resident, was the first man since Parnelli Jones in 1961-62 to win two in a row and only the second three-time champion in history.  The other one was Larry Dickson.  Sheldon won his title in the Ben’s Tire Clinic Chevy owned by Ben Leyba of South Bend, Ind.

Sheldon scored five feature victories on his way to the title to rank high in that department.  Runner-up Rich Vogler tallied four feature triumphs.  Scoring two victories each were Ken Schrader, Chuck Amati, Johnny Parsons, Jac Haudenschild and Steve Kinser.

Sheldon also had six second-place finishes and three each third, fourth and fifth places.  He took over the lead at the outset of the season and there was never very much doubt who was going to win the title.

Jack Hewitt, driving on a non-point license, won the season opener at Eldora on April 24 with Kinser running second and Vogler taking third.  Hewitt made quite a comeback after having flipped during a heat race.

Jac Haudenschild, another non-pointer, won the second feature at Findlay, Ohio on May 5.  Sheldon again finished second with Allen Barr taking third place.

Darkhorse winner Chet Johnson came from 17th starting position to post a popular victory in the Hulman Classic at Terre Haute on May 9.  Randy Kinser finished second and Roger Rager third.  Sheldon finished 18th in a borrowed car after experiencing problems with his own mount for one of the few times during the year.

Parsons won on May 14 when the USAC Sprints made their first appearance at Paducah.  Sheldon was second and Schrader took third.

The traditional Pole Day Sprints were held at Paragon for the first time with Amati coming home the victor.  Randy Kinser was second, Hewitt third and Sheldon took fourth.

The Indiana State Fairgrounds was the site of the May 28 event with Ron Shuman scoring his lone Sprint victory of the USAC season.  Larry Martin was second, Sammy Swindell third and Sheldon fourth.

The defending champion’s first feature victory of the season came at Knoxville, Iowa on June 5.  Finishing second and third behind Sheldon were Vogler and Johnny Coogan.

At I-70, the following day, June 6, Jeff Swindell was the winner with Danny Milburn taking second and Duke Cook finishing third.  Sheldon wound up in the 13th position.

Amati collected his second feature victory at Chandler on June 17 with Schrader finishing second and Sheldon third.  Sheldon then ripped off two consecutive feature victories to gain a wide margin in the point standings.  At Terre Haute on June 20, he showed the way to runner-up Hewitt and third-place Martin.  At Mansfield on June 23, he came home ahead of Jerry Nemire and Vogler.

Local favorite Dean Shirley was the winner as the sprinters ran for the first time at Springfield on June 26.  Larry Rice took second and Vogler was third.

Haudenschild accounted for his second victory at Eldora on July 17 with Sheldon in the runner-up spot and Vogler third.

Vogler then ran off two consecutive victories.  He won at Kokomo on July 21 with Schrader second and Steve Long third.  Rich then captured the Paragon event on July 28 with Sheldon second and Parsons third.  Red Bledsoe suffered a broken pelvis in a practice accident at Paragon.

Chuck Gurney made his first USAC Sprint appearance in three years a winning one at Santa Fe on July 30.  Steve Kinser was second, Shuman third, Joe Saldana fourth and Sheldon fifth.

Schrader monopolized honors at Beaver Dam, Wisc. on July 31, nipping Sheldon to take first in the Sprint event after also winning a companion Midget feature.  Bill Tyler was third.

Three drivers staged a drag race coming off the fourth turn on the final lap of a thriller at Terre Haute on Aug. 8, with Steve Kinser taking the victory ahead of Shuman and Hewitt.

Vogler took his third victory of the season at Santa Fe on Aug. 20 with Martin finishing second and Parsons taking third.

Larry Rice scored his lone triumph Sept. 5 at Terre Haute with Schrader finishing second and Sheldon third.

Vogler copped his fourth feature at Bloomington on Sept. 11 with Schrader second and Milburn third.

In the “4-Crown Nationals” at Eldora on Oct. 3, Steve Kinser drove to victory over teammate Danny Smith, who was second and third-place Shuman.

Final action of the year was at 311 Speedway.   In the first of a pair of twin features on Saturday night, Oct. 16, Schrader was the winner with Van Gurley second and Sheldon third.  Sheldon then won the night’s second feature with Steve Chassey second and Gurley third.  In the lone feature on Sunday, Oct. 17, Sheldon finished off his season in fitting fashion with a victory while Schrader was second and Gurley third.

Sheldon’s season was a remarkable display of front-running consistency.  He was in the top-five in 20 of the 25 features in which he participated and finished sixth and seventh in two others.  He also was fast qualifier on five occasions.

Vogler’s runner-up drive included 10 finishes in the top-three.  He was fast qualifier three times.

Milburn took third in the point standings and won Rookie of the Year honors with 17 top-ten finishes in 23 starts.

Leyba also won the car owners’ title with William King/William Powers, Vogler’s owners, taking second and Damon Fortune and Milburn tying for third.

Coogan suffered a broken jaw and punctured lung in a September race crash at Terre Haute but was well on the mend by season’s end.
