Pikes Peak International
Hill Climb 100th Anniversary Membership Club
Spencer Penrose of Colorado Springs realized early the tourist
potential of Pikes Peak near Colorado Springs. In 1915 Penrose finished converting
the narrow carriage road to the summit of the 14,110-foot mountain into the
Pikes Peak Highway. In order to publicize his adopted hometown and his new road,
he devised a simple plan - run an automobile race to the summit of Pikes Peak
on the new highway.
The first Pikes Peak Auto Hill Climb was held August 10- 12, 1916.
Through the years the road has been widened, now paved, but for the most part the course and race format have not changed significantly from the original. Drivers and cars came from all over the world to compete in one of the most grueling courses known to the world of racing. Consisting of 12.42 miles of surface with 156 turns, the race concludes at the peak’s 14,110 foot summit.
Now, almost 100 years later,
men and women from across the globe gather every summer in their continuing
effort to “conquer Pikes Peak.” The race is now the second-oldest
in America behind the Indianapolis 500. We continue to celebrate the history
and legacy of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb with the new 100th Anniversary
Membership Club.
