SCOURING THE STATS: USAC MIDGETS APR. 27, 2021 EDITION

By: Richie Murray – USAC Media

Kokomo, Indiana (April 27, 2021)………Buddy Kofoid enters this weekend’s two-night Kokomo Grand Prix at Kokomo (Ind.) Speedway, Friday-Saturday, April 30-May 1, as the USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget point leader.

This will be the Penngrove, Calif. native’s first Kokomo Grand Prix, although two previous outings in the midget at Kokomo have produced a 10th and a 5th as well as three USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car starts in which he notched three consecutive top-fives.

No driver in USAC National Midget history has won at the first three venues on the series schedule in a single year.  Following a February win in the Ocala, Fla. season opener and another victorious instance at Port City Raceway in Oklahoma, Kofoid would become the first ever to achieve the feat with a triumph at Kokomo this weekend, which provides him with not one, but two opportunities.

Kofoid is thus far the only driver with multiple victories this season, which has elevated Keith Kunz/Curb-Agajanian Motorsports to the entrant standings lead.

Kofoid, last year’s series Rookie of the Year, leads practically all statistical categories that have to do with feature racing with 52 laps led, three top-five results and four top-tens in four starts.

Kofoid, Justin Grant (Ione, Calif.) and Ocala night two winner Thomas Meseraull (San Jose, Calif.) have finished inside the top-ten in all four appearances this season.  Grant, Kofoid and Chris Windom (Canton, Ill.), meanwhile, have raced to three top-fives in four starts.

Kofoid’s KKM teammate Bryant Wiedeman (Colby, Kan.) leads all Rookies as the 11th place driver overall in the standings.  Tanner Thorson (Minden, Nev.), a winner last time out at Port City on Apr. 11, has set quick time twice, the only driver to do so.

Speaking of Thorson, only one driver has won multiple USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car and USAC National Midget features before the end of April in a season.  That was none other than A.J. Foyt in 1961.  If Thorson can win this Friday night’s Kokomo Grand Prix opener, he’d become the first to do so since Indy’s first four-time winner did them same a half-century ago.  Thorson won his first two career USAC National Sprint Car features last weekend during Keystone Invasion at Big Diamond Speedway and Path Valley Speedway Park.

Meseraull and Daison Pursley (Locust Grove, Okla.) are the only individuals with two heat race wins this season, while 13 different drivers have started all four feature events in 2021: Emerson Axsom (Franklin, Ind.), Justin Grant, Buddy Kofoid, Jason McDougal (Broken Arrow, Okla.), Cannon McIntosh (Bixby, Okla.), Thomas Meseraull, Ethan Mitchell (Mooresville, N.C.), Daison Pursley, Chase Randall (Waco, Texas), Logan Seavey, Tanner Thorson, Bryant Wiedeman and Chris Windom.

Kofoid’s run on Apr. 10 at Port City Raceway, which saw him win from the 16th starting position, was the furthest back any driver won from since the start of the 2015 season.

Thorson’s win at Port City on Apr. 11 was the 21st of his USAC National Midget career, which surpassed the great A.J. Foyt’s 20 career tallies to move a tie with Steve Cannon, Jimmy Caruthers, Rex Easton and Ken Schrader for 29th all-time.

Kofoid’s Port City win netted him his fifth career series victory, the last four of which came in a span of seven starts dating back to last season.  The most recent in that span moved him into 115th all-time in series wins alongside Spencer Bayston, Mike Bliss, Lonnie Caruthers, Larry Dickson, Mike Fedorcak, Burt Foland, Justin Grant, Mack McClellan, Danny McKnight, Cliff Spalding, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Jerry Weeks.

Cannon McIntosh’s fast qualifying time on Apr. 10 at Port City was the fourth of his career while Meseraull’s on Apr. 11 was just the 2nd of his two-decade career with the series.

Kevin Thomas Jr.’s next feature start, meanwhile, will mark the 100th of his USAC National Midget career.  Thomas (Cullman, Ala.) captured the most recent edition of the Kokomo Grand Prix by a the length of a front bumper over Grant in April 2019.

On Friday at Kokomo, all gates open at 3pm ET, drivers meeting at 6pm and cars on track at 6:30pm.  Adult general admission tickets are $20 & kids 12 and under are free.  USAC member pit passes are $30 apiece and $35 for non-members.

On Saturday, all gates open at 3pm ET, drivers meeting at 5:30pm and cars on track at 6pm.  Adult general admission tickets are $20 & kids 12 and under are free.  USAC member pit passes are $30 apiece and $35 for non-members.

Both nights of the Kokomo Grand Prix will air LIVE on FloRacing at https://bit.ly/3frPoW6.
