USAC D2 MIDGETS COMPETE IN THE TOM BIGELOW CLASSIC FRIDAY AT GAS CITY

Gas City, Indiana (June 23, 2022)………Gas City I-69 Speedway and the USAC Midwest Thunder SpeeD2 Midgets salute a legend during this Friday night’s Tom Bigelow Classic at the 1/4-mile dirt oval on June 24.

Bigelow will be on hand to chat, talk racing and sign autographs as Midwest Thunder series competitors compete for increased prize money featuring a $5,000-plus purse.

Bigelow, originally hailing from Whitewater, Wisconsin, captured the USAC National Sprint Car championship in 1978 and the USAC National Midget title in 1984.

Bigelow stands second on USAC’s all-time National Sprint Car feature win list with 52 career victories between 1969-81.  In 1977, he won a series single season record 14 USAC National Sprint Car features.  He possesses the all-time record for most career fast qualifying times in USAC National Sprint Car racing with 65.

His 23 career USAC National Midget wins between 1968-89 and six career USAC Silver Crown wins between 1972-77 both rank within the top-25 all-time.  Bigelow is one of three drivers in the history of Silver Crown racing to win four races in a row, which he did over two seasons in 1975-76. Only Jack Hewitt and Kody Swanson have replicated that feat. 

He’s a three-time winner of the Ted Horn 100 at the Du Quoin (Ill.) State Fairgrounds in 1972, 1975 and 1977 as well as a one-time winner of the Hoosier Hundred at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in 1975 and the Bettenhausen 100 at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in 1976.  Additionally, Bigelow scored a victory in the first ever pavement Silver Crown race at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds in 1975.

Bigelow made nine starts in the Indianapolis 500 between 1974 and 1982, finishing 6th in 1977 and 8th in 1980.

The Midwest Thunder Midgets will be joined in action by Gas City Sprint Cars, Stock Cars and Hornets.

General admission tickets are $15.  Students are $10 while kids age 12 and under are free.  Pit passes are $30.  Pit passes for ages 6 and under are free.

Pit gates open at 3pm Easters with the front gates opening at 5pm, hot laps at 6:30pm and racing at 7:30.
