THE USAC MIDGET LEADERBOARD: JULY 8, 2022

By: Richie Murray – USAC Media

Brandon, South Dakota (July 8, 2022)………Buddy Kofoid and Justin Grant have entered uncharted territory as they prepare for this weekend’s USAC NOS Energy Drink Midget National Championship events during the Huset’s Speedway USAC Nationals in Brandon, S.D. on July 8-9-10.

Each driver has recorded top-ten finishes in each of his first 10 starts to begin the 2022 season.  Likewise, the same two individuals did the exact same thing in 2021!  That made the pair the first two drivers in the history of the series to accomplish the feat in consecutive years.

In the 67-year history of USAC, there have only been 13 instances of a driver posting a top-ten result in each of the first 10 series races.  Kofoid (Penngrove, Calif.) and Grant (Ione, Calif.) now possess four of them over the past two seasons.

Outside of Kofoid and Grant, drivers who’ve previously put up 10-straight top-tens to open their USAC National Midget season include Tracy Hines (18 in 2014), Brad Kuhn (14 in 2009), Mel Kenyon (13 in 1985 and 12 in 1967), Jay Drake (12 in 2001), Rico Abreu (12 in 2014), Logan Seavey (12 in 2018), A.J. Fike (10 in 2003) and Tyler Courtney (10 in 2019).

Kofoid and Keith Kunz/Curb-Agajanian Motorsports (Columbus, Ind.) command control of the current point standings with a 46-point advantage over Grant and his RMS Racing (Western Springs, Ill.) team.  Kofoid, the defending series champion, possesses several “mosts” in 2022, including feature wins (4), laps lead (89), top-fives (9), top-tens (10) and fast qualifying times (3).

His KKM teammates Bryant Wiedeman and Kaylee Bryson also own a bit of the top rung in a couple categories.  Wiedeman (Colby, Kan.) has scored the most heat race wins thus far with five.  Bryson (Muskogee, Okla.), meanwhile, gained the most positions in a single USAC National Midget feature in three seasons during June’s Tri-State Speedway’s round of USAC Indiana Midget Week.  Her 18 position advancement was the largest since Kyle Larson went 23rd to 4th at Placerville (Calif.) Speedway in 2019.

Mitchel Moles (Raisin City, Calif.) remains the leading series Rookie of the Year candidate, currently standing 4th in the rankings.  He’s one of nine drivers who’ve started all 10 events to this point along with Bryson, Grant, Kofoid, most recent series winner Cannon McIntosh (Bixby, Okla.), Thomas Meseraull (San Jose, Calif.), Taylor Reimer (Bixby, Okla.), Hayden Reinbold (Gilbert, Ariz.) and Wiedeman.

BOOK ‘EM:

Recently crowned back-to-back Indiana Midget Week champ Buddy Kofoid made some more history at Lawrenceburg Speedway in June when he became the first to string together four consecutive USAC National Midget feature victories since Kyle Larson did so during a span that overlapped the end of the 2012 season and the start of 2013.

Only 10 previous instances – among seven drivers – had won four-in-a-row with the series: Shorty Templeman (1956), Mel Kenyon (1969), Rich Vogler (1979 & 1988), Kevin Olson (1987), Billy Boat (1995-96), Dave Darland (2003) and Larson (2012-13).

In the series’ first visit in three seasons to Granite City, Illinois’ Tri-City Speedway in June, Kofoid became the first driver since Tyler Courtney at Ohio’s Eldora Speedway in 2019 to pull off a complete sweep by setting the fastest qualifying time, winning his heat race and capturing the feature win all in a single night of racing.

Seventeen-year-old Jacob Denney (Galloway, Ohio), in just his sixth career USAC National Midget start, became the series’ newest first-time winner in June at Lincoln Park Speedway, which also gave Mounce-Stout Motorsports its first ever series victory.  With Denney’s score, the 2020 and 2021 USAC Midwest Thunder SpeeD2 Midget champion became the first Ohioan to earn a USAC National Midget feature triumph since Teddy Beach in 2005 at the Indianapolis (Ind.) Speedrome.
