KOKOMO MIDGET “GRAND PRIX” APRIL 8-9; GOLOBIC NOTCHES 1ST USAC NATIONAL VICTORY AT Du QUOIN

The “Kokomo Grand Prix” is next up for the USAC Midget National Championship, scheduled for April 8-9 at Kokomo (Ind.) Speedway. The race annually features the top Midget drivers in the nation on one of America’s most spectacular short dirt tracks.

Darren Hagen won last year’s “Kokomo Midget Grand Prix,” but this year’s second National Midget race should be “wide open” as a number of title contenders have surfaced to seek the crown captured in 2015 by the recently-retired Tracy Hines.

Last Saturday night’s “Shamrock Classic” National series opener at the Southern Illinois Center in Du Quoin produced a truly surprising result as Fremont, Calif. driver Shane Golobic earned his initial USAC National feature victory. Golobic stands atop the current point standings entering the April 8-9 two-night extravaganza after wheeling the Matt Wood Motorsports Elk Grove Ford/Competition Suspension, Inc. Spike/Esslinger to the 50-lap win.

Golobic snatched the lead away from Shane Cottle on lap 34 and led the rest of the way to beat Cottle, Thomas Meseraull, Brady Bacon and Tony Roney. Cottle had grabbed the lead on lap six after race organizer Bryan Clauson encountered mechanical problems with his mount after leading from the pole.
