A LOOK BACK: 1988 USAC NATIONAL SPRINT CAR SEASON

Steve Butler of Kokomo, Ind. became the first driver in USAC history to win three-straight National Sprint Car championships as he grabbed the 1988 series crown, scoring three wins along the way in the Stoops Express Chevy.

The only driver to win both with and without the wing, Steve was also the only driver to win on both dirt and paved surfaces.

After an eight-year hiatus, the series returned to the paved ovals in 1988 with rousing success.  Three of the paved races aired live on ESPN from Indianapolis Raceway Park and Butler won the last of these – the tradition-rich “Tony Hulman Classic.”  That victory made Steve only the second repeat winner of the race in 18 years, but the first to win it back-to-back.  He won it on the dirt at Terre Haute in 1987.

In the special Switzer Cherry Candy pavement point standings, Butler edged the talented Bob Frey by only one point for that championship too.

The advent of the wings to the series continued to produce new feature winners, with Sammy Swindell, Brad Doty, Danny Lasoski and Joe Gaerte scoring their first USAC triumphs.

Greg Staab quietly took the runner-up spot in the final standings, beating out Jack Hewitt by only five points.  Greg’s night in the spotlight finally came, though, when he nabbed a 30-lapper on ESPN at IRP in July.

Hewitt was the winningest driver in the series, scoring four victories, but wound up third in the final points.

Butler trailed Hewitt through mid-July, then used his pavement prowess to move to the front and stayed there the rest of the year.

In addition to retaining the “Tony Hulman Classic” tradition by moving it to Indianapolis Raceway Park, the series saw the renewal of the famed “Joe James/Pat O’Connor Memorial” race at the refurbished Salem Speedway.  Bob Frey was the winner there.

True Value Master Mechanic Tools offered tremendous support for the series with their sponsorship of the last chance races.  Participants were appreciative of their involvement, which helped create an even more competitive atmosphere.
