A LOOK BACK: 1987 USAC NATIONAL SPRINT CAR SEASON

Defending Crestliner Vans/USAC National Sprint Car champion Steve Butler waged a season-long war with challenger Rich Vogler which ended only after the final shots were fired at the series finale in Eldora in September, giving the Kokomo veteran his second consecutive championship.

Butler and Vogler tossed the point lead back and forth like a football until Steve’s late-season victory in a 40-lapper at Paragon.  That win, which concluded a sweep of the Indiana races for the Hoosier, left him with a comfortable, but not totally safe lead going into the “4-Crown Nationals” finale at Eldora.  A third-place finish in the Eldora 30-lapper sealed the verdict.

Butler’s three victories in the Stoops Express/Pacific Forge/Jarrett Farms Chevy included the 17th “Tony Hulman Classic” at Terre Haute as he became the race’s 16th different winner.  He hopes to become only the third driver in USAC history to win three Sprint Car titles and the first to win three in a row.

Steve’s victory at Paragon came in the fourth winged race of the year.  Race organizers in 1987 were given the option of a winged or the more traditional non-winged race and several opted for the winged variety.

Following Vogler’s back-to-back wins in the season openers, including the “Don Branson/Jud Larson Classic” at Eldora, rains interrupted a scheduled two-race Eastern spectacular in Pennsylvania which would have debuted the wing concept in USAC.

Newcomer Rick Ungar then flew to victory in the winged opener at Eldora in late April.

Following Butler’s back-to-back wins at Terre Haute in May, Oklahoma’s Tony Armstrong won a winged feature at Jackson in his only 1987 USAC start.

Kevin Huntley also recorded his first-ever USAC win in a race at Impact Speedway in Oregon, Wisc., then Vogler won the “Silver Anniversary” 30-lapper at Eldora in mid-June.

Kenny Jacobs, the 1986 True Value Hardware “Rookie of the Year,” put together back-to-back wins in winged features in his native Ohio.

Tony Elliott then scored a stunning victory in a live 30-lap feature on ESPN National television at Santa Fe in August.  He later climaxed the season with a spectacular win in the “4-Crown” finale at Eldora.

Ron Standridge also joined the list of first-time winners, taking the 30-lapper at his home track in Springfield.

Butler’s final point edge over Vogler amounted to 32 points, as surprising Tray House, without a victory, but with consistent performances, ended up third in the standings ahead of Huntley and Jacobs.

Two veteran performers were dearly missed as the series wound down.  Three-time champion Sheldon Kinser was forced out of action by illness late in the year and Ohio’s popular Bud Wilmot was forced into an early retirement by eye injuries suffered in a violent flip at Eldora in March.
