LEARY RIGHT ON PACE IN THE PAVEMENT DEPARTMENT / USAC LEADERBOARD

Winchester, Indiana (July 18, 2022)………Throughout much of the USAC Silver Crown division’s history, pavement has played a major role on the path to a series championship.

The relatively even mix of dirt and pavement venues on the schedule is unique to the motorsports landscape, which makes it among the versatile disciplines to master.

C.J. Leary, a two-time winner on the dirt in his Silver Crown career, toppled the field in late June at Wisconsin’s Madison International Speedway for his first pavement win with the series, and will have another shot on the asphalt this coming Thursday night, July 21, during the Rich Vogler Classic Presented by The Pallet Builder at Indiana’s Winchester Speedway.

For the Greenfield, Ind. native, it was a way of swiping away the label of “dirt specialist” and making his way to being known as one of the contenders in the series on both surfaces, which usually relates to success in the championship race.

Though the series point leader’s Madison victory came more than three years since his most recent Silver Crown pavement start, it came in just his eighth overall pavement appearance, making him look the part of a season veteran and a dominator of the blacktop as he led all 100 circuits.

While it may seem like a longtime coming for Leary on the pavement, a glance at the top-10 in terms of all-time USAC Silver Crown victories shows that Leary is right on pace amongst his peers.

Dave Steele, Kody Swanson and Bobby East are among the most decorated racers in USAC Silver Crown history, each owning at least multiple championships as well as a double-digit number of wins.  Swanson won in his 12th pavement start in 2011 at Indianapolis Raceway Park, Steele his 18th start in 1998 at Memphis Motorsports Park and East in his 10th start in 2004 at Richmond International Raceway.

For Bobby Santos, the greatest pavement specialist of his era, it took 12 attempts to crack victory lane for the first time with the series on asphalt in 2009 at IRP.

USAC Triple Crown champ Tracy Hines’ dry spell on pavement lasted until a dominant performance at Pikes Peak in his 13th pavement start in 1999.

Jason Leffler’s eighth pavement appearance led to an IRP victory and led him straight to a first career USAC Silver Crown title with Bob East turning the wrenches.

That’s how Leary would like to envision the 2022 USAC Silver Crown season concluding by following his first pavement win in his eighth start with a championship celebration alongside Bob East and his Klatt Enterprises crew.

That’s the goal and that’s the measure that Leary now stands atop of at midseason, by a mere six points over second-place Logan Seavey, heading to the banks of Winchester.
