In celebration of the 50th year of USAC Silver Crown Champ Car racing in 2020, we are reviewing the past 49 years of series history.

1991 USAC SILVER CROWN SEASON REVIEW

Twenty-year-old Jeff Gordon of Pittsboro, Ind. captured his second consecutive USAC National driving championship in 1991, following up his 1990 National Midget crown by claiming the Silver Crown title.

It became apparent from the outset that he would be the man to beat as he registered back-to-back triumphs in the Skoal Bandit Copper World Classic opener at Phoenix International Raceway and the subsequent A.J. Foyt’s True Value Hulman Hundred at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.

Driving the M & L Plumbing/Dillon Inn/Marker Trucking/Beast Special fielded by Fred Ede of Fresno, Calif., Gordon exhibited the same flair which brought him the 1990 Midget championship as he dominated the openers, leading 88 of the 150 miles of racing.

“It really surprised me,” Gordon said of the early success in his Silver Crown career.  “The Phoenix win was great, but to back it up with the Hulman Hundred win was unbelievable.”

Taking a 90-point lead over runner-up Wally Pankratz into the Pepsi-Cola 100 at Indianapolis Raceway Park in June, Gordon started third and was again leading by the 14th lap.  His engine started souring 40 laps into the race, though, and after 68 laps, he was on the sidelines with a blown head gasket as Johnny Parsons drove to his first-ever Silver Crown victory.  Pankratz finished fifth and cut Jeff’s lead to just 23 points.

Commitments to the NASCAR Busch Grand National Series precluded him from competing in the A.J. Foyt’s Coors Light Hoosier Hundred at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in August.  Not only did that keep him from a possible $10,000 bonus for winning both events at the Indy Mile, but it also put his point lead in jeopardy.  Jack Hewitt drove his car at Indianapolis and won the pole, then led the first 18 miles before the engine expired.

“I didn’t think I had much of a chance to win the title by missing the Hoosier Hundred,” Gordon said in retrospect.  “But my team gave me a great car all season long and that made the difference.”

Jeff Swindell scored his first Hoosier Hundred victory, but Russ Gamester and Jimmy Sills shot past Gordon in the standings with their third and second-place finishes.

A fourth in the Marlboro Tony Bettenhausen 100 at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield in mid-August kept him close to Sills in the points, but he admits he could have finished higher in the 100-miler.

“We were still fighting engine problems at Springfield and it was running hot at the end of the race,” Gordon said.

Trailing Sills by 61 points into the 100-miler at the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds on Labor Day, Gordon qualified fifth, but Sills claimed the pole and led the first 20 miles.  Jimmy’s bid to repeat as the series champion ended, however, on the 50th lap as his engine expired and Jeff’s eventual fourth-place finish behind winner Stevie Reeves was significant.  Although Gamester finished sixth, both he and Sills mathematically slipped from contention, leaving Gordon with a lock on the title going into the final race at Eldora Speedway.

“I have to thank (car owner) Fred (Ede) and his son and Ron Rasmussen for giving me a car that could win every race,” Gordon stated.  “Bob East also deserves a lot of credit for building a winning car in his first season of Silver Crown racing.”

With the title in hand, Jeff could easily have had a leisurely afternoon at the 4-Crown Nationals finale, but with a $10,000 winner’s check up for grabs, he wasn’t about to take it easy.  He won the pole for the 50-lapper and led the first 23 laps, building a sizable lead.  On his way to an apparent big payday, he tried to pass Sills in the high groove at Eldora but ended up in the third turn wall and coasted to the front stretch with a damaged front end.  He then watched Jack Hewitt pick up the $10,000 victory.

“Winning the Silver Crown championship is really a tremendous accomplishment.  I know I won it, but it probably won’t sink in until I get that ring at the National Awards Dinner in January,” Gordon said at the time.

At 20 years of age, Jeff is the youngest driver to win a Silver Crown title.  In 1991, he became the youngest driver at the time to wear a USAC National Champion’s ring, and through his first four years of USAC racing, he amassed a fantastic record of driving achievements.

Winning 22 races and posting 11 second and 10 third-place finishes in 94 total feature starts through 1991, he left an indelible mark in the Silver Crown, Sprint, Midget and Western States Midget series.  His victory percentage after 1991 was an amazing 23.4% with a top-three finishing percentage of 45.7%.

Other series highlights included Larry Rice’s series-record 100th career start in the Eldora finale and the tremendous record crowd for the Hulman Hundred at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in May.

The Silver Crown series suffered its first driver fatality in 21 years when Danny Milburn of Indianapolis, Ind. crashed on the seventh lap at the Phoenix season opener.

Du Quoin winner Stevie Reeves won the USAC Silver Crown division’s Rookie of the Year for 1991 while Russ Gamester earned the series’ Most Improved Driver Award.

JEFF GORDON WINS COPPER WORLD, MILBURN FATALLY INJURED

Avondale, Arizona………Jeff Gordon of Pittsboro, Ind. scored his initial USAC Silver Crown victory on February 3 at Phoenix International Raceway, winning the accident-marred 50-lap Skoal Bandit Copper World Classic 1991 season opener at the one-mile Arizona oval.

Danny Milburn of Indianapolis, Ind., a veteran of USAC Silver Crown and Sprint Car racing during the past decade, suffered fatal injuries in an accident on the seventh lap of the race when he and Mark Alderson tangled and both hit the outside wall in turn one.  Alderson was treated for minor neck injuries and released.

Gordon trailed defending Silver Crown champion Jimmy Sills for the first 35 miles of the 50-miler and took the lead when Sills’ engine failed on lap 36.  Eric Gordon of Greenfield, Ind., runner-up to Sills in the 1990 standings, finished second behind Jeff, with Wally Pankratz of Orange, Calif., Russ Gamester of Peru, Ind. and Steve Chassey of Carmel, Ind. completing the top-five.

Sills had won the pole position in the 30-car field on February 2 with a track record speed of 136.116 mph.

Gordon’s M & L Plumbing/Rasmussen/MPD Products team won over $10,000 in prize money from the total purse of over $56,000.

Former USAC Silver Crown champion Chuck Gurney was running second late in the race when engine problems forced him to the sidelines.

Defending race winner Ken Schrader retired after 24 laps due to magneto failure.  He started on the front row next to Sills.

HUGE CROWD CHEERS JEFF GORDON TO HULMAN HUNDRED VICTORY

Indianapolis, Indiana………The largest crowd in recent Hulman Hundred history saw Jeff Gordon of Pittsboro, Ind. capture the May 24 USAC Silver Crown 100-miler at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.

Presented by True Value Hardware Stores, A.J. Foyt’s Hulman Hundred showcased the nation’s premier open wheel dirt track talent on the one-mile oval, and after passing defending series titlist Jimmy Sills, Gordon led the final 72 miles of the race.

The win kept Gordon and his M & L Plumbing/Dillon Inn/Marker Trucking/Beast undefeated in 1991 Silver Crown competition.

Sills finished second, with Pankratz third, Danny Smith fourth and George Snider fifth.

Brad Noffsinger of Huntington Beach, Calif. won the pole for the 100-miler but lost the lead at the start to Steve Chassey, who paced the first 13 laps.  Sills then moved to the front until succumbing to Gordon’s charge.

Only two yellow flags slowed the race, the first when Chuck Gurney and Gene Lee Gibson tangled in turn three and the second when Mark Alderson hit the wall in turn three.

Gordon’s team collected $11,000 for the win.

Jim Keeker and Steve Butler came from 15th and 16th starting spots for third and fourth, respectively, with Wally Pankratz finishing fifth.  Keeker won the 25-lap Jonathan Byrd Cafeteria Qualifying Race.

Series point leader Jeff Gordon led 27 laps before retiring with a blown head gasket after 68 laps.  His 18th finishing position keeps him atop the standings, but Pankratz now trails him by just 23 points.

Only two yellow flags slowed the race, one when defending race winner George Snider contacted the outside wall in turn one on lap seven.

GURNEY WINS THIRD-STRAIGHT TONY BETTENHAUSEN 100 AT SPRINGFIELD

Springfield, Illinois………Chuck Gurney of Livermore, Calif. became the first driver in history to win a third-straight Marlboro Tony Bettenhausen 100 USAC Silver Crown race on August 17, driving the Plastic Express/Middleton Special to victory in the 100-miler at the Illinois State Fairgrounds.

In scoring his fifth victory in the last seven years at the one-mile dirt oval, Gurney led the final 39 miles of the race after passing defending series champion Jimmy Sills of Placerville, Calif.  Sills finished second and took over the Silver Crown point lead in the process.

Stan Fox, of Janesville, Wisc., outqualified a field of 38 cars, all of which took the green flag in the rain-delayed 100-miler.  Sills led the first 31 miles before Fox moved to the front.  On lap 48, Sills, who started alongside Fox on the front row, regained the lead but Gurney, who started third, caught him on the 62nd lap and led the rest of the way.

Pre-race favorites Jack Hewitt and Johnny Parsons tangled on lap four and Hoosier Hundred winner Jeff Swindell retired with engine trouble on lap 71.

Gurney averaged 96.734 mph for the distance, completed in 1 hour, 2 minutes and 1.53 seconds.

REEVES WINS FIRST Du QUOIN; JEFF GORDON CLINCHES SILVER CROWN TITLE

Du Quoin, Illinois………Stevie Reeves scored his first USAC Silver Crown victory on Labor Day at the Du Quoin State Fairground, holding on to beat a fast-closing Steve Butler at the finish of the 100-miler.

The engine in Reeves’ Hoosier Tire/Trac-Master Special started to sour in the final 10 miles and Butler made up nearly a half-lap deficit to finish a car-length back at the checkered flag.

Jeff Gordon, with a fourth-place finish at Du Quoin, locked up the 1991 USAC Silver Crown championship in the M & L Plumbing/Dillon Inn/Marker Trucking/Beast.

Defending Silver Crown titlist Jimmy Sills set a new track record of 117.759 mph to win the pole for the 100-miler and led the first 20 miles before yielding to Reeves.  The engine in Sills’ Pioneer Concrete Special expired after 49 miles, relegating him to a 20th place finish and second in the Silver Crown standings.

Jim Mahoney won the 15-mile qualifying race which preceded the 100-miler.

Accidents forced the race to be halted twice.  Jerry Russell crashed through the third turn guardrail on the 30th lap and Mark Alderson blew a tire and flipped in turn one on lap 50, but both drivers escaped serious injury.

Rossburg, Ohio………Jack Hewitt earned a record 14th career USAC Silver Crown series victory on September 22, driving the Barfield’s Gift Fruit/Race Ready Chassis Special to a 50-lap win in the 4-Crown Nationals at Eldora Speedway.

Jeff Gordon was the fastest Silver Crown qualifier at Eldora and led the first 23 laps before he hit the wall in turn three.  Russ Gamester then took the lead for a lap, but a blown tire ended his chances for victory.
