THE CLOSEST FINISHES OF THE 2021 USAC SEASON
Speedway, Indiana (December 6, 2021)………Jake Swanson’s last ditch, spark raining Hail Mary outside pass on the 30th and final lap of November’s Oval Nationals opener at California’s Perris Auto Speedway was, to many, the most memorable single snapshot of the 2021 USAC National season.
As it turned out, the Anaheim, Calif. native’s first career USAC AMSOIL Sprint Car National Championship feature victory was the closest finish of the entire year among all three National series.
The .010 second interval between Swanson and Kevin Thomas Jr. ranked number one overall this season, among four in which the top-two finishers were separated by less than a single tenth at the stripe.
Justin Grant’s first career pavement USAC Silver Crown win in the series’ debut on the Winchester (Ind.) Speedway high banks in June ranked second overall of the 93 events at 0.050 sec., among two Silver Crown races that slotted into the top-six spots in terms of closeness.
The top midget finish of the year came during the Indiana Midget Week opener at Paragon Speedway in June when Thomas Meseraull sliced by Cannon McIntosh on the final corner of the final for the win.
On the flip side, Tanner Thorson turned in the most dominating performance of the entire USAC national season with an Eastern Midget week score at New Jersey’s Bridgeport Speedway in which Thorson trounced the field by nearly half-a-lap, 8.429 seconds ahead.
