1963 USAC MIDGET REVIEW: SECOND NO MORE, WENTE FINALLY A CHAMP

By: Richie Murray – USAC Media

For three daunting years, a vigilant Bob Wente continuously knocked at the proverbial championship door, finishing as the runner-up in the standings behind Jimmy Davies for three consecutive seasons.  However, in 1963, the 30-year-old Saint Louis, Missourian was not to be denied in his arduous USAC National Midget driving championship quest.

Wente grabbed feature victories in the final two events of the four-race Sunshine State series in March to earn himself the Florida championship, which, in the larger picture, firmly established his stand atop the overall series point standings.  He was never headed from that point forward, competing in 48 of the scheduled 72 events to compile 411.05 points.

Driving the Robert J. Shadday Offy, Wente posted 10 victories, was second in six races and third on eight other occasions.  He posted the fastest qualifying speed five times.  For Indianapolis, Indiana’s Shadday, 1963 was the only year his name ever appeared in the USAC National Midget standings, and he made it a good one by also earning the series entrant title.

Meanwhile, the battle for second place was a see-saw affair that went right down to the wire.  Mel Kenyon slid back into second place, a spot he had held earlier in the season, but he needed a break to get there.  Kenyon got it by winning the biggest race of his young career when he captured the 150-lap Turkey Night Grand Prix Ascot Park in Gardena, Calif. in November.  Kenyon nosed out Tommy Copp in a ferocious battle for the runner-up spot with  Kenyon posting 322.40 points to 319.35 for Copp with the two drivers trading positions all season long.

The division showed an increase of $53,873.05 over the 1962 season, with a total of $191,724.05 being paid out.  Wente collected $10,543 of this, not counting his share of the point fund money which amounted to $9,403.05.

Over the winter, promoter J.C. Agajanian unveiled a new quarter-mile dirt track inside the half-mile at Ascot Park and presented weekly USAC National Midget racing throughout the summer.  Twenty-one points-paying series races were held at the Gardena, Calif. oval in 1963, creating numerous scenarios in which simultaneous USAC National Midget events occurred on the west coast and in the Midwest at the same time.  Parnelli Jones was the first winner on the quarter-mile.

Johnnie Parsons, the 1950 Indianapolis 500 winner and 1949 AAA National Champion, returned to USAC racing this year not as a driver, but as the representative for National Midget races in the western and southwestern regions of the U.S.A.

Gene Force became the official starter for the four races held in Florida during March.  During the 20 years in which he had been active in the sport, Force was a sensational driver, finishing second in the AAA Midwest championship in 1952 and finished 11th in the 1951 Indianapolis 500.  Les Kimbrell served as chief scorer, timer and statistician for these events.

The first ever USAC National Midget event conducted outside the borders of  the United States was held in April at the Canadian National Exhibition Fairgrounds in Toronto, Ont.  Race leader Wente changed a tire during a stoppage, but due to an official USAC rule, he was forced to replace it and make the change when the race was restarted.  This cost him three laps and the checkered flag.  Elmer George won the 200-lap race, besting the 33-car field in Dick Kincaid's Offy.

A new addition to the 1963 USAC racing schedule brought the USAC National Midgets to the 2.3-mile Watkins Glen International road course in August where Eddie Johnson scored the 100-mile victory in his Jerry Zeelo-owned machine.

The division made a raucous and successful debut at the Ohio State Fairgrounds on September 2 with an overflow of patrons that overwhelmed security, carnies and corn dog vendors alike as eventual champion Wente scored the inaugural Buckeye 100 win, an event which was held annually on the half-mile dirt venue between 1963 and 1970.

“I've never seen anything like it,” series director Bob Stroud exclaimed of the Buckeye 100 atmosphere.  “And I wasn't the only one surprised.  The fair officials didn't expect the kind of crowd we drew and, consequently, weren't ready for it.  The fans there were so eager to get into the stands, they just rushed the gate and knocked over one of the ticket booths.”

Among the first-time visitors to USAC National Midget victory lane in 1963 were future three-time Indianapolis 500 victor Bobby Unser, one-handed Allen Heath, Don Horvath and Chuck Hulse, all of which came at Ascot Park.  Also tallying wins were Bob Harkey at New Jersey’s Wall Stadium, Elmer George in Toronto, Dean Holden at California’s Kearney Bowl and future two-time series champ Mike McGreevy at New York’s Islip Motor Speedway.
