1957 USAC MIDGET REVIEW: TEMPLEMAN BACKS IT UP WITH A HAT TRICK

By: Pat Sullivan

Shorty Templeman of Seattle, Wash. completed the “hat trick” in midgets for 1957, winning the USAC National, Midwest and Pacific Coast championships.  Never before had a driver been able to claim all three titles in the same year.

For several years, Templeman had been the top professional in the midget ranks, and he worked hard in 1957, appearing in 54 races, winning six, placing second nine times, third three times, and on eight occasions, he was the fastest qualifier.

With 184 drivers participating in the 65 feature events, Templeman had serious competition.  Rex Easton of Springfield, Ill. challenged him for the point lead all summer and lost out by a small margin.  In the matter of wins, Easton had an edge of 11 to eight.  Easton had the most sustained stretch of success, winning seven of 14 races during the month of August.

Gene Hartley of Roanoke, Ind., with a strong finish, wound up third in the final national standings.  George Amick of Venice, Calif. scored seven feature wins, but limited his participation to 31 events and finished eighth.

At the end of April, with all the races to that time scheduled on the Pacific Coast, Billy Garrett of Burbank, Calif. was the leader by one point over Templeman with Johnnie Tolan in third.  The May champion was Lloyd Ruby of Wichita Falls, Texas, but Rodee, Easton and Sutton followed.

Templeman scored the most points in June, and this really gave him the boost he needed to win another midget title.  Amick, Turner, Easton and Rodee followed in that order for the most points scored in June.  The month of July went to Sutton with Templeman second, Turner third, Easton fourth and A.J. Foyt fifth.  Foyt, a youngster from Houston, Texas, made his presence felt the rest of the way.

During August, it was all Easton as the Springfield driver made a determined bid for the title.  Turner was second for the month, Sutton third, Hartley fourth, Foyt fifth and Templeman sixth.  Hartley was the point leader for September, but Templeman was second and clinched the championship.  Rodee was third, Gays Biro fourth and Chuck Weyant fifth.

With just a handful of races left after October 1, Templeman was too far out in front for anyone to catch him.  The 38-year-old Washingtonian then proceeded to win the Pacific Coast crown to add to his Midwest and National titles.

The 1957 midget season started with the Tangerine Tournament, a series of 11 races at various tracks in Florida during February and March.  Most of the top small car pilots made the trek to the Sunshine State and the result was some of the closest and most exciting racing of the year.

Winning four of the 11 feature events, Andy Linden of Speedway, Ind. swept to the championship.  Linden was unbeatable at Orlando’s Sunbrock Speedway, winning all three races there.  He added a victory at Tampa’s Florida State Fairgrounds and two seconds for a commanding lead in the final point standings.

After this sensational start, Linden had the most successful season of his career, but suffered critical head injuries in a November midget crash at California’s Clovis Speedway, permanently ending his racing activities.

Chuck Rodee of Indianapolis, Ind. was the 1957 USAC Indoor Midget champion as a result of his performance in the two races at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Ind.  Rodee scored two third-place finishes.  Gene Hartley won both feature events, but Rodee picked up points in the other portions of the programs.

Rodee got his racing start in  driving school at Raceway Park in Blue Island, Ill. in the late 1940s.  He traveled all the way to Little Rock, Ark. for his first taste of actual competition in a midget.

Three drivers died in USAC National Midget competition during the year.  Jack Jordan of Elgin, Texas was killed when his car overturned during qualifying on April 7 at the Arizona State Fairgrounds, dying two days later from a fractured skull.

Just three weeks after capturing his second career USAC National Midget triumph, Al Alpern of Chicago, Ill. ramped over another competitor’s wheel during the second heat race at Michigan’s Grand Rapids Speedrome on June 20, causing him to flip and, ultimately, succumb to his injuries.

In his first appearance at Wisconsin’s Milwaukee Mile, one-time USAC National Midget winner Hank Nykaza was killed in a back straightaway accident which sent his car careening into the back straightaway wall, snapping his seat belt upon impact and ejecting the Chicago Heights, Ill. driver before his body landed on the track’s surface.
