THE LEADERBOARD: USAC AMSOIL NATIONAL SPRINT CAR STATS (5-17-2022)

By: Richie Murray – USAC Media

Terre Haute, Indiana (May 17, 2022)………It’s been an unchanged melody at the top of the leaderboard for Emerson Axsom, who maintains a stranglehold in several statistical categories this season in USAC AMSOIL Sprint Car National Championship competition.

The Franklin, Ind. teenager owns sole possession of the number one spot in the driver point standings, the Rookie standings and in top-five finishes with five in six starts.  He shares the lead in feature wins (2), top-tens (6) and fast qualifying times (1).  On top of it, his team – the Clauson Marshall Newman Racing #47BC – leads the entrant standings.

Brady Bacon (Broken Arrow, Okla.) became the second driver to capture multiple feature victories this year following his triumphant performance last Thursday night at Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kan.  With a total of 28 laps led this past weekend, the four-time series champ has taken over the lead in most laps led with 58.  In fact, Bacon has led laps in each of the past three events, leading 58 of a possible 90 laps.

Three drivers have finished inside the top-10 in all six of their feature starts this season with Axsom joined by Logan Seavey (Sutter, Calif.) and Justin Grant (Ione, Calif.) in that category.

There are six different drivers who’ve set fast time during Fatheadz Qualifying this year, the first time there have been six different fast qualifiers to start the season since a decade ago in 2012.  Axsom and Grant are in the group along with Robert Ballou (Rocklin, Calif.), Buddy Kofoid (Penngrove, Calif.), C.J. Leary (Greenfield, Ind.) and Jake Swanson (Anaheim, Calif.).

Bacon’s 42nd career series victory at Lakeside sent him past Bryan Clauson and into a tie for sixth all-time alongside 1974 and 1976 champion Pancho Carter.  Ballou’s score last Saturday at I-70 Motorsports Park in Odessa, Mo. was the 32nd of his career, elevating him past Tyler Courtney and into a tie with 1973 champion Rollie Beale for 14th all-time.

Ballou’s fast qualifying time was his first with the series since September 15, 2018, at Tri-State Speedway, and just the ninth of his career.  Axsom, meanwhile, notched his first career quick time with the series at I-70.

This weekend, the USAC AMSOIL Sprint Car National Championship travels to the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track for the 12th running of the Don Smith Classic on Friday night, May 20, and the 52nd annual Tony Hulman Classic on Saturday night, May 21.  A rain date (if needed) has been established for Sunday night, May 22.

On Friday, the pits open at 3pm Eastern, front gates at 4pm, drivers meeting at 6pm and hot laps at 6:30pm with qualifying and racing immediately following.

On Saturday, the pits open at 3pm Eastern, front gates at 3pm, drivers meeting at 6pm and hot laps at 6:30pm with qualifying and racing immediately following.

Each night, general admission grandstand tickets are $30. Kids age 10 and under are free.  Infield tickets are $20. Kids age 10 and under are free.  Pit passes are $35.

Both nights of racing at Terre Haute can be watched live and on-demand on FloRacing at https://bit.ly/3dgONXz.
